There is a reason for that, of course. What worked just a few years ago in finding a new job no longer works at all! All the \u201crules\u201d have changed!<\/p>\n<p>As I point out in\u00a0<em><strong>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ISBN=0615346219\/biospaceA\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018Headhunter\u2019 Hiring Secrets: The Rules of the Hiring Game Have Changed . . . Forever!<\/a><\/strong><\/em> (as well as in numerous other places), first and foremost, you must understand that hiring is a game, and like every game, it has its own unique set of rules. To be a winner at this particular \u201cgame,\u201d then, you must first learn these rules\u2014many of which have changed dramatically in the last several years!\u2014and then learn how to effectively play by them. It is vital, therefore, that your cover letter also be addressed to a specific person. (Do NOT ask for a return receipt.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Secret # 3<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Use a \u201cnewspaper\u201d headline<\/strong>, such as the one used in the example cover letter above:<\/p>\n<p><strong>How I can reduce your utility system\u2019s energy costs and ensure that your utility system doesn\u2019t keep you awake at night!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Other effective headlines that have been used:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is your open Sales Manager position in the Southwest keeping you awake at night?<\/strong> (And include a packet of instant Starbucks coffee.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>I can alleviate your headache caused by your vacant Controller position!<\/strong> (And include a packet of Aleve in the letter.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Secret # 4<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Make effective use of bullet points<\/strong> and brand yourself as someone who knows what the job consists of and what you can\u2014and will\u2014do in the position. Clearly define yourself. Don\u2019t make the hiring manager guess at what you can do or what, specifically, you have to offer. Here is how the candidate accomplished that in the example cover letter above:<\/p>\n<p><strong>The utility system of a plant is its \u201cheartbeat.\u201d<\/strong> As an experienced utility engineer, I understand the criticality of:<\/li>\n<li>Preventative maintenance<\/li>\n<li>No unexpected downtime<\/li>\n<li>Reduced energy costs<\/li>\n<li>Reduced emissions<\/li>\n<li>And no lost time due to health and safety issues\n<p><strong>Secret # 5<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Get the hiring manager EXCITED and make him\/her want to speak to you by branding yourself as someone who understands and empathizes with his\/her pain:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mr. Jones, my mission is to ensure that you don\u2019t get a phone call at midnight because something went down due to utilities.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Secret # 6<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Underscore your commitment to seeking the position<\/strong> by telling the hiring manager that you\u00a0<strong>will be calling him\/her at a specific time<\/strong>, usually within a week:<\/p>\n<p><strong>I will call you<\/strong> on Thursday, April 12, 2012, at 8:00 a.m. ET to discuss how I can be of value to you at any of your facilities in the Midwest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Remember:<\/strong> In today\u2019s hypercompetitive job market, you must PUTT (pick up the telephone)! And then, you must know what to say when you do make the call (to be covered in my next article).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Secret # 7<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Include the name of the hiring manager\u2019s administrative assistant.<\/strong> (The letter must go to someone high enough in the organization to have an assistant. These people\u00a0<em>actively<\/em> look for talent!) The names of administrative assistants are usually quite easy to get. Simply call the company and ask!<\/p>\n<p>If this is not a convenient time,\u00a0<strong>please ask Ms. Roberts to call me and suggest another time.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This adds a personal touch to your letter, and that is very important because it brands you as someone who is professional, courteous and detailed in his\/her approach to business.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Secret # 8<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In your signature block, along with your name, include the following:<\/li>\n<li>Phone number<\/li>\n<li>Email address<\/li>\n<li>LinkedIn profile link\n<p><strong>Secret # 9<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Always include a \u201cP.S.\u201d<\/strong> This is simply \u201cMarketing 101.\u201d Considerable marketing research has shown that eight out of ten people who open a direct mail piece\u2014and yours will be opened if you send it via\u00a0<strong>U. S. Certified Mail<\/strong> \u2014 will read the\u00a0<em>\u201cP.S.\u201d first<\/em> before reading\u00a0<em>anything<\/em> else in the letter!<\/p>\n<p>P.S. \u2013 Please call me today to learn how I\u00a0<strong>reduced energy costs 12%<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>effluent discharge by 15%<\/strong> over the past year at my current manufacturing facility.<\/p>\n<p>Other effective P.S.s we have used are:<\/p>\n<p>P.S. You can no longer afford to be simply a job seeker. And that world normally is most likely to be populated by the people who \u201cfeel the pain\u201d associated with open positions, i.e., the actual hiring managers.
